<image:title>Blog - Postcard from Mallorca - DAY 2</image:title>
<image:caption>Friday began with an early wake-up as we had an hour's drive to our boat tour meeting point in Palma. We got into the city with time to spare but ended up almost missing our tour because there wasn't long-term parking available near the marina. After calling the company director a couple of times, they held the boat and we made it just in time. The boat cruise was on a beautiful 250-person catamaran that toured along the southern coast of the island. The tour consisted of two stops where we anchored for people to snorkel, with freshly cooked kabobs and delicious drinks. It was a bit chilly when the boat was moving but warmed up a lot when the wind settled. We spent time meeting a group of kids who were also studying abroad in Barcelona and shared many mutual friends. This was an incredible way to spend our day and reminded me of spring break trips with my family growing up.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After docking, we decided to walk around the city of Palma. Our first stop was the beautiful Cathedral of Mallorca. We were in our beach clothes, so we weren't able to go inside, but it was definitely worth the stop. After that, we visited a couple of local stores, where I bought a gift for my brother's girlfriend and a fun necklace for myself. We left Palma and drove back to Cala D’or to freshen up for dinner.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from Dublin - DAY 2</image:title>
<image:caption>Our friends Katie and Liv flew into Dublin on Saturday morning and arrived at the hotel around 9:30. After catching up, we got ready and grabbed a quick coffee at Soren & Son. In addition to a delicious drink, I ordered a unique-looking sausage roll which ended up being so tasty... From there, we headed in the direction of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The church was absolutely stunning, but we didn't want to pay for a ticket to the church, so we just peeked our heads inside. Outside the cathedral, there was a little St. Patrick’s and sustainability-themed market featuring many different vendors. While abroad, my goal is to find a special gift for each of my family members. At this market, I bought a delicate emerald ring for my sister, who has a May birthday… After the market, we met up with Morgan’s parents to shop more before getting lunch. After lunch, we stopped at Carol’s which is the place for getting all things St. Patrick's themed at a very reasonable cost. Here, we found a couple of fun knickknacks and St. Patrick's themed necklaces.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from Dublin - We woke up excited for a full day of St. Patrick's festivities. After a quick coffee at Soren & Son, we walked to meet up with Morgan’s mom to see the St. Pat’s parade. Her mom had been waiting for a spot at the parade for two hours, and the streets were filled with miles and miles of people lining up to view. Other than a couple of large floats, the parade reminded me of parades that we had in our city back home with local kids’ bands. After about an hour, we were chilly and left to view the rest of the parade from a warm bar. We then went to a club called Dicey's Garden with Morgan’s mom and her coworkers to celebrate. This was, hands down, the coolest venue I have ever been to, inside and out, with multiple levels, rooms, hidden bars, and the most delicious corned beef and cabbage.</image:title>
<image:caption>After a couple of hours at Dicey's, I complimented a girl on her hat, which led to an interesting conversation. Turns out she was from St. Charles, a small town in Minnesota where my mom grew up, and she knew one of my cousins. I seriously couldn't believe this connection, as most of my friends who grew up in Minnesota had never heard of St. Charles. We finished the night with an incredible dinner at the Shelbourne and went home to bed, as we had to get up to catch an early flight.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Study Abroad Paradox - There are many life-altering benefits to studying abroad. The first is that moving to a new country fosters independence and adaptability (I myself can attest to this). I have grown in my confidence and understanding of culture. I am now not afraid to go out of my comfort zone, and communicating with those of different backgrounds. I have learned that it is important to ask questions rather than make assumptions. I have learned that people across the world have more similarities than differences.</image:title>
<image:caption>I have gotten to engage in the most incredible experiences, from skiing down the Swiss Alps to spending St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin, Ireland (stay tuned for an upcoming blog post). I have immersed myself in culture, teaching myself a new language, participating in local traditions, and adapting to the Spanish lifestyle. I would trade none of this for the world. I am grateful for each and every experience and the incredible people I have met along the way. Never in my life did I think I would be able to say that I’ve been to 12 countries over the course of 16 weeks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Study Abroad Paradox - When studying abroad, it is important to find a balance. Many find themselves forced into the idea that you need to “make the most” out of the little time we have abroad. Because of this, we pack every weekend full of incredible trips and excursions, making memories that will last a lifetime. There is an unspoken pressure put onto students to travel every weekend, post a million pictures to document our experience, and to continue to go out to clubs week after week, even when we are exhausted. Most students find that they don’t get enough sleep, are not eating properly, are drinking too much, and are falling behind in school. Being abroad forces us to break our traditional and structured schedules that we have back at our home universities and learn how to adapt to a go-with-the-flow way of living. Non-stop exploration and travel can lead to burnout, and taking breaks is a necessity. There is an immense guilt many students feel about wanting to go home but not wanting to waste the rest of their time abroad.</image:title>
<image:caption>“I was supposed to go to Morocco next weekend, but I ended up canceling because I am so exhausted I don't think I can get on another plane,” said Cassidy Kohl, an abroad student.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from Paris - In an attempt to save money, we decided to walk home while exploring the city. Europe is the definition of a walking country. Public transportation is the ideal way to go long distances because Uber can be expensive. You must travel with someone who can agree on transportation. We got ready for dinner and took the metro to our meeting spot. Because we were in Paris for Valentine's Day, we decided to save the money on gifts and spend it on experiences. For that reason, we decided to splurge on a Valentine's dinner boat cruise. The dinner was a set menu with the most delicious food. For $150 per person, we were provided a four-course meal, a bottle of wine, and a tour of the entire city. The boat company timed it out so we would be directly in line with the Eiffel Tower on the hour. As the lights began to sparkle everyone got up from their tables and rushed up to the top deck. This was truly the most surreal and romantic experience of my life thus far. We ended our night meeting up with friends at Caveau De La Huchette which is a LaLa Land-inspired jazz club. To anyone visiting Paris, this is a must-see club. I suggest going early as it was packed to the brim.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from Madrid - Day 1</image:title>
<image:caption>After a brisk twenty-minute walk, we checked into the Hey Hotel. Our group of seven booked an eight-person room, and a girl from Italy joined us. The Hey Hotel is just $40 a night and conveniently located near the Plaza Mayor, where we began our day. The Plaza Mayor is in the center of the city and is a perfect home base when traveling to Madrid. As an avid foodie, Mercado de San Miguel was my favorite part of the trip. The market was full of vendors selling delicious food and drink. Each booth specialized in its cuisine, which was cooked on demand. Our group decided the best way to try everything and spend the least amount of money on things to share with the group. (Spanish culture is rubbing off on us.) We ate chicken dumplings, calamari sandwiches, focaccia with prosciutto and burrata, bao buns, and empanadas. Then, we finished off with a sweet treat of ice cream with meringue and THE BEST churros and chocolate, alongside a couple of glasses of sangria. So yes… Mercado de San Miguel is Fabulous.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from Madrid - Day 2</image:title>
<image:caption>Saturday began with a deciduous breakfast at Federal Cafe right around the corner from the hostel. I recommend getting the banana pancakes and ham and egg croissant. From there we walked through a large park to get to Parc de Retiro and were immediately blown away. We saw people enjoying picnics, street performers, musicians, and fountains galore. Many visitors were rowing boats on the pond to get close to the monument. I suggest you go early if you want to rent row boats. As dreamy as they looked, the line was too long for us to wait. We were able to walk through the monument taking pictures in awe of its vastness and attention to detail.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from Madrid - Next, we sprinted to the gates of Riyadh Air Metropolitano to find our seats. This sold-out stadium was shaking with pride for their team. We bought tickets on the top deck for 55 euros to save money but spent around 20-30 euros on drinks. Our friends purchased box seats with unlimited food and drink for 80 euros, which was more cost-effective (who knew). After the game, some friends went back to the hostel while Morgan and I stopped at Mercado de San Miguel for a quick sweet before bed.</image:title>
<image:caption>To those thinking about studying abroad, make sure you take time to explore different parts of your home base country. Madrid changed the way I see Spain and it is such a worthwhile destination. Stay tuned for a postcard from Paris! Julia</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from Milan - DAY 1</image:title>
<image:caption>Friday morning came too soon, as I’d been sick all day Thursday and didn’t have the energy to pack before bed. I set my alarm for 4:30 a.m. to pack before my flight. I landed in Milan at 10 a.m. and took public transportation from the airport to Kieran's apartment. Little did I know the train stop was 2 miles from Kieran’s apartment, so I Uber’d the rest of the way. Once there, I got ready for the day, and we were out the door. The apartment is located just outside Chinatown, so we stopped at La Ravioleria Sarpi for pork dumplings on our way to the financial district. Although good, I would not go out of my way to stop here again. After our snack, we walked through the beautiful financial district on our way to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, where Kieran bought a stunning (and overpriced) wallet from Mont Blanc. The shopping center was one luxury store after another, and its beauty was beyond compare (shown in the picture). This is where I found out that I was missing Milan Fashion Week, scheduled the following week…UGH!.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from Milan - Saturday morning, we woke up and purchased train tickets to Lake Como. The Uber to Milan Central took much longer than expected. We arrived at the train station 3 minutes before departure, sprinted through security, and hopped on the train as the doors were closing. Due to my poor planning, we spent the 50-minute train ride on the floor. We arrived at Como San Giovanni and followed the crowd to the lake. I was in awe of the beauty of Lake Como but would suggest visiting Lake Como on a weekend with good weather and little to no fog forecasted. We explored the streets full of stunning buildings, churches, and flea markets.</image:title>
<image:caption>After shopping around, we decided to head back to the water. We walked along the coastline, taking in the amazing views, while losing track of time and realized we needed to get back to the train station asap. When we arrived back in Milan, we had to rush to meet our friends for the Inter Milan Futbol game. All nine of our seats were together in the upper deck. Being from the U.S., I’ve never understood the magnitude of European Futbol games. Inter Milan won the game 1-0, with Captain Martinez scoring a goal in the last 15 minutes of the game.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from Switzerland - Day 2</image:title>
<image:caption>Friday began with a 6:30 a.m. wakeup call. We were exhausted but eager to get on the slopes. Breakfast at the lobby buffet was delicious, but most importantly, it was FREE. We walked with the group to a local rental shop called Outdoor, rented our gear, and hopped on a train up the mountain. The train was nearly silent, and people stared out the windows in awe of the views. Within minutes of arriving at the lodge, we were on the chairlift heading up the mountain. One of the guys we traveled with had never tried on a pair of skis in his life. Let’s just say Switzerland may not have been the best place to start. After about 30 wipeouts on the first run of the day, we decided to take a break and have a drink. My friends and I grabbed a table outside one of the ski-up bars on the mountain and ordered ciders and traditional Swiss hash browns. After lunch, we went back up the mountain and continued skiing, taking in the scenery and all its beauty every chance we got. I like to think that I am a fairly good skier, but the Switzerland mountains did everything possible to prove me wrong. Skiing in Switzerland was hands down one of the coolest experiences of my life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from Switzerland - Day 3</image:title>
<image:caption>Saturday morning started off with a quick and delicious hotel breakfast followed by an exhilarating hike. We walked to a beautiful vantage point on Lake Brienzersee. As you can see from the pictures, it was unlike anything I have experienced in my life. We stood there taking in the scenery, talking about how lucky we were to be in a spot so peaceful and beautiful. On our walk home, we stopped at the rooftop bar Top of the Hotel Metropole for wine and charcuterie. We spent the whole lunch with our phones in our purses, chatting while we took in the views. My friends and I shopped, and I picked out my commemorative postcard. We went back to the hotel, took a nap, and got ready for dinner. Dinner at Fondue Villa & Garden was incredible, and I would suggest anyone going to Interlaken make a reservation ahead of time. We were a bit late to the punch, but fortunately, the restaurant went above and beyond and set us at a table in the back. It ended up being the best thing that could have happened as the workers at the restaurant came and sat at our table in between helping the guests. After dinner, we walked back to the Hüsi Bierhaus to meet our friends for drinks to end a successful day.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from London - Public transportation in London is a game-changer, as it was cheap and we got to experience our first double-decker bus. Fair warning to those traveling to London - our group had next to no cell reception in the city. A kind elderly gentleman wrote down directions for us to get to Burrow Market to meet a group of friends who traveled separately to London. We explored Burrow Market, taking in the delicious smells and food-filled booths, and all of a sudden, we were very hungry. Of course, we needed to stop for some authentic fish and chips and decided to sit down for a bite at Lord Clyde to have the most incredible fish and chips ever.</image:title>
<image:caption>After lunch, we returned to our Airbnb to get ready for the concert with John Summit’s music playing in the background. The concert was truly a night to remember and one of my favorite parts of the trip. After the concert, getting home was nearly impossible without cell reception, so we walked to a nearby burger joint and met a lovely group of locals who helped us order an Uber to our Airbnb. After stopping at Wingstop, we hopped in the pre-ordered Uber for home.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Postcard from London - Going into our London trip, I thought the only way to experience a city's culture was through its landmark attractions. After our trip, however, I realized what made it so special: the connections with locals, which not only changed my perspective of the city but also changed my views of cross-cultural human interaction.</image:title>
